Advantages of Water-Based Wax vs. Paste Wax for Composite Mold Release

2020-11-06

In our most recent Knowledge Base article, we took a closer look at how conventional sacrificial mold release coatings—like paste waxes—compare to some of the latest semi-permanent mold release options available. Semi-permanent mold releases, especially those that are water-based, offer a lot of benefits that can lead to process efficiencies and increased ROI in a wide variety of molding applications across the industries we work with.

But, what if your particular molding operation has determined that paste wax is still the best release agent for you? As we covered in that earlier post, paste waxes still check many boxes in the “pros” column, especially for composites molders—even if those mold releases tend to go on relatively slowly and create buildup over time.

The good news is that a revolutionary alternative to paste waxes exists today: Honey Wax® Hydro Speed. This mold release option has created a water-based wax versus paste wax decision point for composite molders that didn’t previously exist. And we think it’s high time many of these molding pros give it a look—it may reduce your labor time by as much as 75%!

Quick Review: Who Should Choose Paste Wax?

Again looking back at our previous article about sacrificial versus semi-permanent mold release options, we highlighted manufacturers in the business of fabricating large-scale, one or few-of-a-kind parts or components (boat hulls, etc.) as those who most often rely on paste wax products. However, some plastics molders and rubber part manufacturers also find traditional solvent base paste waxes work best for their operational needs, too.

Paste waxes present a relatively low-cost option and offer advantages that cannot necessarily be achieved with alternative releasing agent products. These include the fact that applicators do not need much training in how to use paste wax, as it gives good visual cues to indicate proper coverage on the mold surface.

Why Honey Wax Hydro Speed is a Better Option

Of course, in many molding applications where paste wax is highly valued as a releasing agent, Honey Wax Hydro Speed can now be used instead. (You’ll want to look at our product comparison chart in our Composites Mold Release catalog to get the full comparative picture.)

The biggest reason Honey Wax Hydro Speed is preferable over most paste waxes—even other Honey Wax products—is the fact that it’s non-hazardous and non-flammable because it is water-based. But you’re probably wondering, doesn’t a water-based wax take forever to dry? Not at all—the water carrier in Hydro Speed dries in less than one minute!

Check out our comparison video showing how Honey Wax Hydro Speed performs versus the competition! (Note: Meguiars M-08 is now our own Stoner Miracle Gloss® mold release wax.)

Spray it On Instead of Wiping On

As you view our video demonstration of Honey Wax Hydro Speed, you likely noticed one of its most significant advantages to your molding operations. It is much faster to apply than rub-on paste waxes since it can be liquid applied by hand or sprayed with an HVLP spray system! It removes faster, too.

In our own testing, we’ve found that Honey Wax Hydro Spray can save up to 75% in labor time compared to traditional paste wax.
